Hemingway wrote a short story using only six words, "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." it went. He claimed that it was his best work. Despite SMCCs thirteen campus parking lots, students are having trouble finding parking.
"Parking is definitely a problem," said Mike Wallace, a first year student at SMCC. "It's an issue that needs to be addressed.

Budget Shortfall To Hit SMCC Next Year

Due to the state of the current economy, the Maine Community College System will see a reduction of $1.7 million for the fiscal year 2010 and the fiscal year of 2011. This budget shortfall has not affected SMCC this semester, but beginning next fall SMCC will feel the sting.

From students handing in last minute work to grading final exams, it's obvious that teachers have a heavy load when semesters draw to a close. It's expected that teachers will grade the papers accordingly and efficiently so that the final grade can be calculated and presented to a student's transcript immediately.

A game in which one side gets crushed isn't that fun and sometimes you cheer for the other team when one of its skinny little players makes the free throw.

New Robotics Club at SMCC

The SMCC students who participated in MATEs 2009 International ROV Competition, Team URSULA, have formed a robotics club at SMCC. The club itself will be separate from our own ROV project and is open to any and all SMCC students with an interest in robotics.

A few students and faculty joined group advisor Jeff Badger in setting dates for coming events, as well as brainstormed on ideas to bring art awareness to the school.

College Students Find Business Ownership a Viable Option in Down Economy

South Portland - Participation has quadrupled in the business incubator program at Southern Maine Community College's Entrepreneurial Center this year. Normally the Entrepreneurial Center services two or three students in the business incubator program but this year the program has enrolled 11 students and more will be interviewed later this month.

We will, however, focus our attention with the online version of The Beacon. While there is something to be said for holding a physical object in your hands, the online Beacon has many potential elements that could work to our advantage and creativity.

SMCC Receives Donation for Scholarship

Phil Grondin, president of the Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament (SITT), made donations to three of Maine's Community Colleges at a ceremony on November 30 at Southern Maine Community College's McKernan Center. SMCC received $10,000; Northern Maine Community College received $7,500 and Washington County Community College received $7,500.
